Professor Brian Goodwin
July 09

It was with great sadness that I learnt today of the death - from post-operative complications arising following a cycling accident - of Brian Goodwin.

As you will recall, when the HCG had responsibility for the PMS academic away day, Brian was kind enough to be one of our guest speakers - &, as I'm sure you'll also recall, he did a wonderful, inspiring, job!

Brian was one of the founding thinkers in complexity theory, as well as being a distinguished structural/morphological biologist of international repute.

He was also passionately committed to environmentalism, & sustainability, working for much of the last 15 years at Schumacher. He was an active participant in, and a key thinker for, the Transition Town movement - which emerged in Totnes.

I responded to a paper by Brian at an international conference in Warwick 18 months ago, & have just read again the letter he sent me, following our discussions. These discussions embodied all of what made Brian such a unique, & inspiring person - his theoretical rigour, his pluralistic approach to ideas, his rich creativity, & the strength of his political commitment to the environment.

I feel a sense of regret now at not having persisted with this correspondence...but it is as nothing compared to the sadness I feel at the untimely passing of one of the greatest intellectual inspirations in my life.

He was a unique man, & an absolutely brilliant thinker.

Integrated Neighbourhood Management and Neighbourhood Policing Exemplar Sites
April 09

A panel of national experts have identified the Redruth North Partnership as one of the best twelve examples of neighbourhood team working in Britain.

In response to a recommendation made in Sir Ronnie Flanagan's Review of Policing, the twelve "Exemplar Sites" – highlighting joint working between local police and other local services – have been identified across England and Wales to act as hubs of excellence.

These sites have been selected on the basis of both the exemplary quality of the service they offer local residents, and the willingness of the individuals involved in each neighbourhood to share their learning and expertise with other teams across the country.

This twelve-month project will help to bring together police forces, local authorities and other partners to help each other deliver the services that communities need together, making them more efficient and better suited to listening to people and tackling the issues that really matter to local residents.

The Redruth North Partnership has been selected by a national committee consisting of representatives from:

  • Home Office
  • Department of Communities and Local Government
  • Association of Police Authorities
  • National Policing Improvement Agency
  • Local Government Association,

who noted the "advanced nature of the partnership working and the ability of the team to really listen, understand and involve the needs of local people". Representatives from the neighbourhood teams – consisting of staff from the Redruth North Partnership, Devon & Cornwall Police, Redruth Town and Cornwall Council, Coastline Housing, West Cornwall ASB team, Cornwall Fire Service, Duchy College, and individuals from the community will be able to access national-standard training to help make their neighbourhoods even better.

Ann Mitchell, Chairperson of the Redruth North Partnership said "I am delighted that the committee has recognised the Redruth North Partnerships hard work. The committee and partners are committed to continuing the enormous amount of effort put in and welcome the opportunity to share our experience and knowledge with other communities"

Champion English Rural Sparks
April 09

Champion English Rural SparksThe TR14ers have been recognized by the Carnegie Trust for the transformational effect on their lives and on the local community and the members have been awarded "Champion English Rural Sparks".

Carnegie UK Trust has recognised five rural champions across the country. The champions – or 'Rural Sparks' - were identified through a widespread search for excellence, run by the Trust.

The nationwide search for 'Rural Sparks' unearthed a variety of inspiring projects, from community-run renewable energy schemes, to initiatives promoting local produce, to residents who harnessed a local heritage spot as a source of community revenue.

The final award winners were chosen by a high profile judging panel, with TV personality Jimmy Doherty from Jimmy's Farm, Eden Project founder Tim Smit; Deputy Editor of Regeneration & Renewal, Ben Walker and former Director of the Commission for Rural Communities, Margaret Clark.

Carnegie UK Trust rural director Kate Braithwaite said:

Carnegie Trust Logo"We are constantly hearing about how the banks and some industries are being bailed out, however the resilience of rural communities could provide an inspiration to us all. As part of Carnegie's commitment to rural areas, we wanted to acknowledge the extraordinary work being done in these communities. The projects we are recognising are innovative involve large numbers of people and contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by all".

Hazel's Back!
May 08

The holiday was amazing!! Such contrasting experiences in both countries (Australia and New Zealand) we were completely 'blown away' by it all, especially N.Z.

Thought we'd missed winter but came back to a snowy UK and freezing Easter! It was a helluva shock after 3 months of temperatures between 41 and 25 degrees!

'Normal' C2 service was resumed a week later with Devon and Cornwall Police and over 4 weeks 140 officers were taken though C2 as part of a 4 day training course for Neighbourhood Beat Managers and PCSO's. These were challenging but thoroughly enjoyable days and I learnt a lot as usual from their feedback, so did they! I'm indebted to my guest speakers Debbie Williams from Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue Service, Gary Smith from Transform and Ali Boyd from Devon County Council.

It was great to reconnect with the amazing TR14ers. No loss of momentum or energy and they have helped Falmouth set up their own much needed, dance workshops. More performances at Eden and in the pipeline are Royal Cornwall Show, another Royal visit from the Duchess of Gloucester (at her request) and a visit to Brittany to Camborne's twin town. The latter came about after a performance to a Brittany delegation recently and will be funded by Camborne Town Council.

Best news till last….have been appointed as community cohesion consultant (C3?) to the Eden Foundation and the New Ground initiative, funded by Carnegie Institute.

Have loved working informally with these guys over last few years and am thrilled to be invited to 'join their gang.' Will keep you posted!

Final Summary Report of Sport England Research Project
February 08

Sport England LogoHere is the summary report for the Sport England research project "Using C2 to engage challenged communities in physical activities".

Final Summary Report (pdf)

January 2008
January 08

Hazel StuteleyWell if I was worried on New Years Day that retirement from NHS in March, after nearly 40 years, would signal the end of C2 I couldn't have been more wrong!

C2 has 'happened' literally from top to bottom of U.K. in Aviemore, Edinburgh, Walsall, Birmingham, Tewkesbury, Bristol, Keynsham, London, Exeter, Barnstaple, Cullompton, Tiverton, Bodmin and St Austell/Eden Project in Cornwall. Diverse places and target audiences which is JUST how we like it. From residents, teachers, police officers, fire officers, nurses, students, social workers, local government officers and sports coaches to gardeners, its been our privilege to deliver C2 to approaching 1000 participants. The huge satisfaction we get when we regularly hear of new initiatives, influenced by C2 is inestimable.

BUT none of this would have happened without you, our very own C2 'connectors and enablers'

HUGE THANKS THEREFORE TO:

  • Norman, Lisa and Pippa DEVON AND CORNWALL POLICE
  • Tony, Juliet & team EDEN FOUNDATION
  • Jane and Wendy SENSORY TRUST
  • Kirsty and Kate CARNEGIE UK
  • Dave, Debbie and all 420 of the TR14ERS
  • Grenville and Kevin BEACON & REDRUTH NORTH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
  • Tash and Bruce SCHOOLS MULTIAGENCY RESOURCE TEAM (SMART)
  • Graham and Steve SPORT ENGLAND
  • Ian and Ali DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL
  • Sue, Bill and Ben WILDWORKS

It's been an absolute blast working with you all!

Just a reminder husband Geoff and I are off to OZ and New Zealand in New Year for a 'live the dream' trip to celebrate 40 years together . If we survive (!!) normal C2 service will resume on March 18th. Susanne will keep everything together in my absence.

Just remains for me to wish you all the best for 2008 from us all at C2 and Health Complexity Group.

Using sport to reach the part that other activities cannot reach
July 07 - Leadership Matters Article

Leadership MattersSport England is a national organization whose key role is to increase participation in sport and physical activity by 1% year-on-year. The organisation has a particular remit to work with people who, until now, have been less likely to engage in sport and physical activity, including people from disadvantaged areas, women, black and ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities.

Leadership MattersSport England South West has long recognised that promoting sport to these groups which are perceived to be 'hard to reach', requires concentrated efforts to think, behave and engage in new ways. In May of this year, leaders of the seven County Sports Partnerships (part of the 'delivery chain for sport and active recreation') from the South West region met with their key strategic partners in Falmouth for a two-day event, where they heard stories from front-line workers, who have actively worked within local communities to bring about positive changes. The event culminated in a visit to two local communities where change had occurred, so that participants could meet and listen to the experiences of residents themselves.

The two-day event, entitled Connecting Communities (C2), was developed and is facilitated by members of the Health Complexity Group from the Peninsula Medical School, Exeter University. The programme was put together from a retrospective analysis of positive changes that took place on two estates in Cornwall, where combined efforts from residents and agency workers enabled the communities to make very real changes, resulting in widespread improvements in healthrelated behaviour and educational standards, as well as reduction in crime.

The main method of delivery for C2 is storytelling; as one of the Health Complexity Group members explains:

"Stories have power; they are second only to seeing what is happening for yourself. They are narratives by which people make sense of what they are going through. They give a vision of what can be done and the different ways that things can be achieved."

C2, with its story-telling mode of delivery, supports participants to take a fresh look at problems and situations, enabling them to make new connections, discover alternative courses of action, and develop effective partnerships.

The programme is traditionally presented as part of a package that involves programme-delivery and impact-evaluation; in the September issue of 'Leadership Matters' we will provide a more detailed report on the theoretical underpinnings of the C2 programme itself, together with a summary of the early impact that C2 had on Sport England and its partners.
